Before I tell you about the cords I learned I need to tell you how a banjo is set up. The first and shortest string on the banjo is called the 5th string. All the other strings after that go in chronological order. They start with 1 and go in order up to 4. The banjo is also divided up in frets. Each fret is divided by a fret bar. The first fret is at the very end of the neck of the banjo and they go in chronological order down the neck. The first cord I learned was an open G. This cord was quick and easy to learn because all you have to do is strum the cords, you don't have to hold down any strings. The next cord I learned was a C. To play a C you have to put your index finger on the third string in the first fret, your ring finger on the fourth string in the second fret, and your middle finger on the first string in the second fret (the first photo). It was really hard for me to get my middle finger all the way to the first string so my dad showed me a different way to play a C. The short way to play a C is to put your pointer finger on the third string in the first fret and your middle finger, but I use my ring finger, on the fourth string in the second fret and you only strum the bottom three strings (second photo). The last cord that my dad taught me for the week was a D cord. A D cord is easier to play than a C because to play a D all you have to do is put your pointer finger on the third string in the first fret and your middle finger, but I use my ring finger, on the second string in the second fret and strum all of the strings.

I think it would be a wonderful idea to come pick a little in class. That would be very entertaining.

Carley, this seems like it will be a very successful project. I think that it would be very interesting if you brought the banjo in one day and played in front of the class.
